As a transportation company, we need diesel and gasoline for our daily operations, but we’re committed to doing our part to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and finding innovative ways to operate more sustainably. Here’s how we’re taking care of the environment on the road and in the office.
On the road.
• We’ve been a SmartWay Transport Partner since 2009.
• We have miles per gallon (MPG) targets for all owner operators to help reduce fuel consumption.
• We maximize fuel efficiency by route planning, loading trailers to optimum levels, and using Long Combination Vehicles (LCVs) to reduce our emissions per tonne of freight.
• We use technology that optimizes our fuel efficiency, like aerodynamic trailers, low rolling resistance tires, and TIREMAAX® PRO inflation systems.
• Our drivers receive pedal management training to learn how to drive efficiently and avoid excess fuel usage.
• We’re investing in alternative fuel and electric heavy-duty vehicles, with pilots and evaluations underway.
Where we work.
• We’ve developed a new environmental standard for the construction of our terminals across North America.
• We’re investing in new terminals with many of the latest environmental innovations: solar panels; geo-thermal heating and cooling for the office; pre-cast wall panels in the dock; LED lighting; electric forklifts, and charging stations for employee vehicles, yard trucks, and one day, local delivery trucks too.
• We’re conducting ongoing energy audits across our network, which have led to a reduction of 2.4 million kilowatt-hours annually since 2017.

Day & Ross has the most LCVs on the road of any transportation company in Canada. Our LCVs consist of one truck and two connected 53-foot trailers, meaning we can haul more freight in a single trip. This leads to reduced fuel consumption, fewer vehicles on the road, and less traffic congestion to move the same amount of freight. LCVs are essential to our operations and an important part of our sustainability efforts.
Sustainability Snapshot: Moncton
Our newly constructed Moncton terminal is a critical hub for our operations and one of our most innovative facilities, designed to minimize our environmental impact. This 65,480 sq. ft. terminal has advanced heating and cooling, charging stations for employee vehicles, electrical upgrades to reduce diesel consumption, and the office has lots of natural light and a bright, open workspace. Our Moncton terminal is also home to the largest net-metered solar installation in Atlantic Canada, offsetting approximately 34.5 tons of equivalent CO2 emissions every year.
